If you Google the question, “What is the answer to life, the universe and everything?” Google will tell you 42. This of course is a reference to the book “A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” - an answer provided to the people in the book, by a supercomputer they built to answer that challenging question. Pretty funny to this lifelong technologist – but not the reason I chose 42 in my company's name.
In the late 1990s I was in a new management role and had a boss we will call M. In the few years I worked for her, I experienced tremendous growth, both professionally and personally. She was that good. She retired shortly after and we kept in touch. I think of her often. Though she never used the term coaching, I realize years later that her style of management was anchored in coaching methodologies and she was a natural. In her retirement, she studied coaching and built a lovely portfolio life for herself back in England.
So, what does this have to do with 42? My first year of working for M, she gifted me “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”, telling me it was the only management book I would ever need. I am not sure that is true but it was funny, and when all is said and done, aren't we all trying to answer the question posed above.
